Suddenly Last Summer
Featured Actor…

Jeremiah Maestas

In Suddenly Last Summer, playwright Tennessee Williams crafted the character of Dr. Cukrowicz to be the driving force who must draw the shocking truth forward from the vulnerable Catharine Holly. At the same time, he’s required to speculate over the motives of Catharine’s aunt, Violet Venable, in her efforts to lobotomize her niece. It’s a tight balancing act that requires an oft-forgotten skill: “acting is reacting.” Fortunately, Jeremiah Maestas possesses this skill in spades and plays the role of Cukrowicz (a.k.a. Dr. Sugar) with a sympathetic ear and an open mind.

Acting as a catalyst for the two central female characters, Mr. Maestas expertly guides the audience through this riveting and intricate tale of the fateful previous summer. Not only does he bring careful listening, personal charm, and a unique likeability to the role… he also has extraordinary passion for the play.

“It's Tennessee Williams, it's a classic, it's a masterpiece!” said Mr. Maestas. “I honestly feel that this production is so very true to the essence of what Williams had intended... it's a superb cast and it's gorgeous to look at.”

Mr. Maestas, a native of Colorado, is “thrilled to be back at TheatreWorks and involved in such a phenomenal production.” He last appeared on the TheatreWorks stage in the fall of 2006, starring as Edward Kynsaston in Compleat Female Stage Beauty. Now, in Suddenly Last Summer, he once again shows off his impressive dramatic ability in the role of Dr. Cukrowicz.

“What I love most about the role is that Dr. Cukrowicz is a creation of the wonderful mind of Tennessee Williams. This is my first experience playing in a Williams piece, and because this is ultimately a poem written as a play, being able to speak and listen to such rich storytelling is a treat for an actor,” Maestas added.

Mr. Maestas is an experienced and talented thespian who trained at the University of San Diego and at St. Clare’s University in Oxford, UK. His past TheatreWorks credits include Neil Labute’s The Shape of Things and the title role in The Elephant Man, the latter of which first introduced him to TheatreWorks and widely impressed both audiences and critics.

His New York credits include: Questa
(Wings Theatre Company); A Lesson in Art and The Oral Tradition and Sideways Stories From Wayside School. Other credits include: Jesus Hopped the “A” Train and Earthquake Sun (San Diego Repertory Theatre); Macbeth (Sledgehammer Theatre); Love! Valor! Compassion!, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Hydriotaphia, Romeo and Juliet, As You Like It, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest, Much Ado About Nothing, and Metamorphosis (Oxford, UK).

As always, TheatreWorks is honored and humbled to have a talent (and such a nice guy!) as Jeremiah Maestas on its stage. Won’t you please join Mr. Maestas, this superb cast, and a few friends or family members to see the critically-acclaimed TheatreWorks production of Tennessee Williams’ Suddenly Last Summer.
