More Sizzling Raves for TheatreWorks'
Suddenly Last Summer
"...As often seems to happen up in New Milford in July and August, Suddenly Last Summer represents TheatreWorks at its best. The house was filled as it should be." - The Newtown Bee
"TheatreWorks and director Joseph Russo have mounted a timely revival of Suddenly Last Summer, a work smoldering with an intensity Mr. Russo aptly characterizes as 'equally as layered and emotionally intense' as other of Williams' plays." - The Citizen News
Suddenly Last Summer Featured Actors
Katherine Almquist
As with any production, the whole is only as good as the sum of its parts. And director Joseph Russo has rounded out his cast with a fine group of actors who have shined throughout the run "Summer." Of note is Katherine Almquist in the role of Mrs. Holly, Violet Venable's sister-in-law, desperate for the inheritance of her late nephew. Could she be desperate enough to sacrifice anything...or anyone?
A resident of Sharon, the commanding, statuesque Ms. Almquist was last seen on the TheatreWorks stage during the Holidays in the role of Mrs. Lord in The Philadelphia Story. Prior to that, she was involved with The Kent Community Players for seven years and helped merge that company with The Sherman Players last year. Her favorite roles include La Marquise de Merteuil in Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Lorraine in The Man Who Came to Dinner, and Clairee in Steel Magnolias. She was active in community theatre in Chicago, moved to New York to pursue a fashion career, and "enjoys this time of her life the most."
Let it be said that TheatreWorks enjoys having Ms. Almquist on stage as much as she's enjoying life right now!
David Hutchison
In watching Mr. Hutchison's seasoned portrayal of George Holly - Mrs. Holly's greedy son - it's easy to forget he's the youngest member of the cast. Equally eager to get his hands on the late Sebastian Venable's inheritance, Mr. Hutchison plays George on a fine line, employing the traits of both a charming young man and a spoiled kid.
Suddenly Last Summer marks Mr. Hutchison's TheatreWorks debut. Hailing from far away Shelton, he attends the ACES/ Educational Center for The Arts in New Haven where he was featured in productions such as The Forced Marriage (Geronimo), and most recently, The Farmer in Euripides' Elektra. Come September he will be entering his Senior year at Shelton High School, and has hopes of earning his BFA in Acting.
If his performance is any indication of what's to come from this young man, we have no doubt that his dream will become a reality.
Robbin Christiani
Also making her TheatreWorks debut is Robbin Christiani in the role of Sister Felicity - the ever-watchful nun sent by St. Mary's Asylum to keep an eye on the "unstable" character of Catharine Holly. Ms. Christiani wins the award for longest commute, hiking all the way from Branford to add her expertise to this polished production.
Ms. Christiani recently left her corporate "day job" to pursue her acting full-time. No stranger to Tennessee Williams' work, Ms. Christiani also appeared as Flora in Williams' 27 Wagons Full of Cotton and as Mrs. Hardwicke-Moore in the playwright's Lady of Larkspur Lotion. She has been seen in various comedic roles, most recently as Lois in Cahoots by Rick Johnston.
We're all hoping that gas prices start dropping a little faster to make it a tad simpler for Ms. Christiani to return for future auditions at TheatreWorks New Milford.
KC Ross
In the role of Violet Venable's harried and put-upon secretary, Miss Foxhill, KC Ross is proof that "there are no small roles, only small actors."
Ms. Ross said with a laugh, "I think I have, like, eight lines, but who's counting!" Suddenly Last Summer marks Ms. Ross' return to the TheatreWorks stage after a five-year hiatus. In her last appearance on stage, she played multiple roles in TheatreWorks' production of The Laramie Project. In 2001, Ms. Ross portrayed Nurse Preen in The Man Who Came to Dinner and played a clown performer/widow in 2000's The Taming of the Shrew - both at TheatreWorks.
A resident of Thomaston, Ms. Ross lives with her actor husband John and their many cats. She defines professionalism on stage in so many ways and brings so much to a small role. TheatreWorks is honored to have her back on stage after too long an absence. |

A Little Night Music
September 26 - October 25
music & lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
book by Hugh Wheeler
directed by Bradford Blake
musical director Charles Smith
One of Broadway's most overlooked musical masterpieces, the romantic and achingly beautiful A Little Night Music deals with the universal subject of love in all its wondrous, humorous, and ironic forms. In turn-of-the-century Sweden, middle-aged Fredrik Egerman brings his 18-year-old bride Anne to a play starring his former mistress, Desiree. Soon, Fredrik and Desiree resume their romance, incurring the wrath of her current lover, a pompous Count. The situation culminates in a weekend at a country estate with the two couples in attendance, as well as Fredrik's son (hopelessly in love with Anne), Desiree's illegitimate daughter, the Count's manic-depressive wife, and the Egerman's lusty maid. And there, played out beneath the mysterious summer night, the characters' love and desire reach a heartfelt climax. The breathtaking score by Broadway icon Stephen Sondheim features his most popular song, "Send in the Clowns." |
