TheatreWorks New Milford is truly blessed to have the incredibly versatile Noel Desiato of Sherman portraying Katharine Hepburn in Tea at Five, opening this Friday, at 8:00 p.m.
Originally from Bath, Maine, Ms. Desiato studied acting under legendary actress and acting instructor Stella Adler at her conservatory in New York. She was also a member of Law & Order actor Michael Moriarity’s Potter’s Field Theatre Company in New York City.
In 2005, she starred in a Chinese mini-series shot in Canada entitled Our Children. In 1998, she portrayed “a real bitch” (her words, not ours), Mrs. DeMarco, opposite actor John Shea (Missing, Stealing Home) in the film, Getting Personal. And she also portrayed Margaret, one of many victims of a psychotic killer in the teen slasher film Splatter University back in 1984. To say the least, Ms. Desiato has a very varied and impressive career resume as a thespian.
This is Ms. Desiato’s fourth time on the TheatreWorks stage. Her first was her portrayal of the quirky but lovable Miss Sook Falk in Truman Capote’s Holiday Memories in 2002. She stepped into the shoes of Reggie Fluty, a tough but compassionate police officer in The Laramie Project in 2003. And she completely commanded the stage in 2004’s Medea as Euripides’ vengeful yet sympathetic witch who spites her husband by murdering their children. Needless to say, this type of versatility is a rare thing. And Ms. Desiato pulls it off with brio in portraying one of the great American actresses of the 20th Century in Tea at Five. |

“In this play, the writer is so good that all I have to do is to give away what the playwright is saying,” Ms. Desiato said, referring to Tea at Five’s author, Matthew Lombardo. “I didn’t have to do any research. He writes all the personal stuff.”
“I consider myself a vessel [for Katharine Hepburn]. I break it down and digest it and give it away as best I can,” Ms. Desiato added.
Ms. Desiato doesn’t transform into Katharine Hepburn she literally “is” Katharine Hepburn from the minute the lights go up. She acts as a vessel for this character in a way that will make you wonder if Ms. Hepburn isn’t up on stage. Please see Ms. Desiato in what is sure to be one of the most unforgettable performances you’ll see on stage for years
