The Fourth Wall Is Another TheatreWorks Hit! Don’t Believe Us? Listen to the Critics…

“The Fourth Wall…is an uproarious evening of fun on the boards. It is, as TheatreWorks president Richard Pettibone noted, Mr. Gurney’s ‘love letter to theater,’ one that offers plenty of laughs and some food for thought.” – The Housatonic Times

“Under Sonnie Osborne’s experienced guiding hand, the cast of four gives this play a lovely ride. It makes for a fun evening for informed and sophisticated audiences.” – The Newtown Bee

“Director Sonnie Osborne has her performers doing their best to pump up the hilarity in Mr. Couture’s handsomely executed set. Scott Wyshynski’s and Richard Pettibone’s Lighting and Sound Design was accomplished, while the piano accompaniment of Charles Smith and Choreography of Bradford Blake added lovely touches to the ongoing action.” – The Citizen-News

“The performances are full of pizzazz with [Beth] Bonnabeau's dizzy housewife and [Glenn] Couture's gay theater maven providing the most laughs. [Jonathan] Ross’ bewildered husband is just enough out of the “theatrical” loop to be funny, and [LuAnn] Leonard’s smart New Yorker is as self-centered and opinionated as the familiar stereotype.” – The Danbury News-Times

Page to Stage to present
All About Eve

Thursday, May 21, 8:00pm - Admission is FREE!

On Thursday, May 21, TheatreWorks will present a free staged reading of the classic film, All About Eve, by Joseph Mankiewiczat 8:00 pm. The reading will be followed by a wine and cheese reception.

All About Eve tells the story of Margo Channing, one of the biggest stars on Broadway. But in spite of her unmatched success, she is beginning to show her age – “The Big 4-0.” After a performance one night, she encounters a young woman named Eve Harrington, who claims to be her biggest fan and an aspiring actress. Gradually, Eve insinuates herself into Margo's life ultimately proving that she is nothing but a scheming woman who plans to take from Margo everything she holds dear: her lover, her friends, her stage career, and her fame.

Hailed by critics at the time of its release, All About Eve was nominated for 14 Academy Awards and won six, including Best Picture of 1950. The film starred Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm, and showcased Marilyn Monroe in one of her earliest roles.

“TheatreWorks is very excited to revive its Page to Stage reading series," said TheatreWorks President, Richard Pettibone. "It is important to present audiences with a number of types of theatre. Sometimes, a full production is not possible because of the physical demands of the piece. What Page to Stage helps do is present these shows in a different and interesting way.”

“It’s true that All About Eve is not a stage play, but it’s a classic screenplay about theatre. All about theatre,” said director Joe Russo. “I think our audience is in for a lot of fun, but they’d better fasten their seat belts. It’s going to be a bumpy night.”

The cast includes: Katherine Almquist (Sharon), Peter McGee (New Fairfield), Alicia Dempster (Danbury), John Taylor (Sherman), Jonathan Ross and KC Ross (both Thomaston), Vicki Sosbe, Jackie Decho-Holm, Kevin Bielmeier, and Beth Harvison (all New Milford).

The Fourth Wall – Featured Artist
Jacky Saulnier

“In the Spotlight” recently sat down with Jacky to ask her about her role, the production, and her experience in working at TheatreWorks:

Jacky Saulnier of Danbury returns to her theatrical roots as Stage Manager of The Fourth Wall. Her parents were always involved in local theatre, and as soon as she was old enough to memorize a line or a song, she was bitten. (At seven, when her mother was directing a play starring her father, she pestered her mom until she wrote in a small part for her!) A theatre/mass media grad of Emerson College, her career followed the media path, while raising twins with her husband. Her kids now in college, she’s thrilled to get back into theatre. This is her first production with TheatreWorks, and she says she didn’t realize how much she’d missed that feeling of camaraderie that’s unique to working on a play – that comfortable feeling of being where you belong – with “theatre people”!

You’re new to TheatreWorks…what brought you to us?
I saw an audition notice for The Fourth Wall, read the sides, and loved it, so I gave it a shot. I wasn’t cast, but director Sonnie Osborne called and asked if I’d like to stage manage, and I’m so glad I said yes!

So you’re not new to theatre…what’s your background?
My parents were always involved in local theatre, so I grew up in it. Of course, there weren’t any parts for little kids in the plays they did, but that didn’t stop me. As soon as I could read, I was running lines with them. When I was seven, my mother was directing “Send Me No Flowers” starring my dad, and I pestered her until she actually wrote in a little part for me. A few years later they included me in an outdoor summer musical revue. I majored in theatre and mass media at Emerson College, where my favorite role was Gwendolyn in Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest.” One summer I apprenticed at the old Candlewood Theatre in New Fairfield, where I got to work with such stars as Marlene Dietrich, Stiller & Meara, Ann Miller, Shelley Winters, and Jack Benny in what turned out to be his last live performance. So it’s been awhile, and as I was busy with a career that took the media path while raising twins with my husband, I always missed being part of a production. Now the kids are in college, I’ve got time to indulge my first love.

What do you think so far?
I think I was lucky not to be cast in this play, because LuAnn and Beth are fabulous and a pleasure to watch in rehearsal, and I still get to be part of this wonderful group. I can’t tell you how impressed I am with the professionalism throughout – from set design and technical, to casting, acting, and directing – and how privileged I am to be included. It truly feels like putting on an old pair of shoes – that comfortable feeling of being where you belong.

What will audience members take away from The Fourth Wall?
I’m sure that their sides will ache from laughing – I’ve heard the lines a hundred times and I still laugh out loud at rehearsals, so I can only imagine how much laughter there will be from people who are seeing it for the first time!
